ABS filament
ABS is a technical material for mechanically and thermally stressed parts. It performs best in an enclosed printer with stable conditions.
I'm interested →Mechanical and heat resistance.
Choose ABS when you need a mechanically resistant part and have a printer suited for technical materials.
Best for
- mechanical parts and covers
- jigs and functional components
- parts exposed to higher temperatures
Strengths
- good impact resistance
- higher heat resistance
- suitability for technical use
What to consider
- requires stable temperature conditions
- higher tendency to warp
- needs proper ventilation when printing
Advantages and limitations
Exact print settings may vary by printer, nozzle and part geometry. We'll send the technical data sheet (TDS) on request.

Recommended print settings for ABS
Recommended values for 3DFINITY ABS filament. Exact settings may vary by printer, nozzle and part geometry.
| Parameter | Recommended value |
|---|---|
| Nozzle temperature | 250–270 °C |
| Bed temperature | 95–115 °C |
| Print speed | 25–180 mm/s |
| Enclosed chamber | Yes, recommended, draft-free; if heated, 50–60 °C |
| Part cooling | 0–10% |
| Filament drying | 65 °C / 4–6 h if needed |
| Material density | approx. 1.04 g/cm³ |
Recommended nozzle
| Nozzle | Nozzle diameter |
|---|---|
| standard | 0.2 / 0.4 / 0.6 / 0.8 mm |
Starting point setting (a first point to test)
| Nozzle | Bed | Speed | Part cooling |
|---|---|---|---|
| 260 °C | 115 °C | 50 mm/s | 0% |
Printing tips
Preheat the bed and chamber, add a 5–10 mm brim for larger parts and protect them from draughts. After printing, let the part cool gradually in the chamber and ventilate the workspace. If corners lift, adjust adhesion and preheating first. Small parts and overhangs may need slight cooling.
These values are indicative, for a 0.20 mm layer height and a 0.4 mm nozzle (0.6 mm for CF and GF). Start with the baseline setting and fine-tune it for your printer — maximum speed can be limited by hotend flow rate. The cooling fan value in the table refers to the part-cooling fan; print the first 2 layers without cooling, overhangs and bridges may need more. Leave the hotend cooling fan at your printer manufacturer's default setting. Dry the filament in a temperature-controlled dryer, don't exceed the spool's heat resistance, and after drying store it sealed with a desiccant.
Questions about ABS
What is ABS filament suitable for?
ABS is a technical material for mechanically and thermally stressed parts. It performs best in an enclosed printer with stable conditions.
Is ABS suitable for outdoor use?
ABS is best suited for indoor use. For parts permanently exposed to sunlight and weather, choose ASA.
What diameter and tolerance does 3DFINITY ABS filament have?
ABS filament is manufactured at a 1.75 mm diameter with a declared tolerance of ±0.05 mm. We make it using our own technology in Slovakia with diameter control during production.
