Choose PLA when you need to print a model or prototype quickly, cleanly and without complex tuning.
Best for
- prototypes and test models
- decorative and visual parts
- school and hobby projects
Strengths
- easy to process
- low tendency to warp
- clean surface and good detail
What to consider
- lower heat resistance
- not suitable for long-term outdoor exposure
- consider load for functional parts
Advantages and limitations
Exact print settings may vary by printer, nozzle and part geometry. We'll send the technical data sheet (TDS) on request.

Recommended print settings for PLA
Recommended values for 3DFINITY PLA filament. Exact settings may vary by printer, nozzle and part geometry.
| Parameter | Recommended value |
|---|---|
| Nozzle temperature | 210–225 °C |
| Bed temperature | 50–60 °C |
| Print speed | 25–200 mm/s |
| Enclosed chamber | Not required |
| Part cooling | 80–100% from layer 3 |
| Filament drying | 45 °C / 6 h if needed |
| Material density | approx. 1.24 g/cm³ |
Recommended nozzle
| Nozzle | Nozzle diameter |
|---|---|
| standard | 0.2 / 0.4 / 0.6 / 0.8 mm |
Starting point setting (a first point to test)
| Nozzle | Bed | Speed | Part cooling |
|---|---|---|---|
| 220 °C | 55 °C | 60 mm/s | 100% |
Printing tips
If printing in an enclosed printer, open the door or lid. Heat inside the chamber can soften the filament before it reaches the nozzle and cause a clog.
These values are indicative, for a 0.20 mm layer height and a 0.4 mm nozzle (0.6 mm for CF and GF). Start with the baseline setting and fine-tune it for your printer — maximum speed can be limited by hotend flow rate. The cooling fan value in the table refers to the part-cooling fan; print the first 2 layers without cooling, overhangs and bridges may need more. Leave the hotend cooling fan at your printer manufacturer's default setting. Dry the filament in a temperature-controlled dryer, don't exceed the spool's heat resistance, and after drying store it sealed with a desiccant.
Questions about PLA
What is PLA filament suitable for?
PLA is suited for prototypes, models, decorative pieces and everyday parts where easy printing and a clean surface finish matter most.
Is PLA suitable for outdoor use?
PLA is best suited for indoor use. For parts permanently exposed to sunlight and weather, choose ASA.
What diameter and tolerance does 3DFINITY PLA filament have?
PLA filament is manufactured at a 1.75 mm diameter with a declared tolerance of ±0.02 mm. We make it using our own technology in Slovakia with diameter control during production.
